The Best Team in Independence Cup Held in 1998 And Why
The 1998 Silver Jubilee Independent Cup was an international cricket tournament played to mark a belated 25th independence anniversary of Bangladesh.
The tournament was slated to hold from the 10th - 18th January 1998. It was a round-robin a tournament that was concluded by a one- day international Best of three tournaments. It had three participants of India, Pakistan and hosts, Bangladesh.
Bangladesh had invited the other two nations as the guests of honour to the tournament marking
their silver jubilee independence anniversary.
A total of six matches in all were played in the tournament hosted at the Bangabandhu National
Stadium in Dhaka.
The first match was played between India and Bangladesh on January 10 with India who fielded
first Toss winning by four wickets.
India vs Bangladesh Match had its own challenges as it was almost marred by fog that lasted for about forty-five minutes and had to be delayed till the fog cleared.
While Bangladesh had staged a good fight in their opening game run against India, they could not
find their feet in their second game against Pakistan who outclassed them and won by 9 wickets in that match.
India's first game against Pakistan held on January 11th and India won by 18 runs.
India had won both of their preliminaries to edge into the finals whereas, hosts Bangladesh
couldn't win any despite playing on home ground as the hosts.
In the first final match between India and Pakistan on January 14 India won by 8 wickets,
while Pakistan bounced back in the second final match on January 16 to beat India by 6 wickets.
But India emerged as the best team of the tournament by beating Pakistan in the third final of the
1998 Independence cup by three wickets.
Pakistan had enjoyed a good lead over India from the beginning of the match as the leading
run scorer of the tournament, Saeed Anwar made 315 in his five innings, only
for India to surge over them with the highest total ever recorded to win in a
one day international final, 316/7.
